![]() ![]() For a degree to be clinically based, you must have had specific coursework in counseling skills and fieldwork hours supervised by a licensed or credentialed supervisor. To be eligible for the School Counseling PPS Credential-Only, applicants must already hold a clinically-based master's degree from a regionally accredited university. Saint Mary’s PPSC graduates enter schools with the self-confidence and skills to be advocates for their students, parents, teachers, and greater community. In keeping with CCTC requirements, our program gives primary emphasis to helping public school pupils achieve academic success by emphasizing the importance of student support services. We also emphasize the holistic wellness of students and school communities, and our students learn how to support PreK–12 pupils in the academic, career, and social/emotional domains as outlined by the American School Counselor Association ( ASCA).Įach student receives an individualized plan of study within a cohort model, wraparound supervision and support both on campus and in the field, and attends intentionally small classes for an in-depth experience. Our counseling framework emphasizes culturally responsive counseling and social justice, which is reflected in the College's Lasallian Core Principles and the Department’s Student Learning Outcomes. The Counseling Department at Saint Mary’s prepares PPSC students to become professional, empathic, well-rounded School Counselors through best practice academics and field experience. Credentials are awarded through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing ( CCTC). To become a School Counselor in PreK–12 California public schools, you must have a School Counseling Pupil Personnel Services Credential ( PPSC). If a candidate elects to complete 200 of the 800 hours in a setting outside of the Pre-K-12 school system, they must have a site supervisor that has a master’s degree in counseling or a related field.Post-Master's School Counseling Credential Spring Term Priority Deadline: October 15th, 2023 ![]() At least six hundred (600) clock hours must be completed in public school settings with Pre-K-12 pupils. Two hundred (200) hours of the eight hundred (800) clock hours may be completed in other areas related to schools and/or counseling, such as field work hours needed for a Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) authorization. Projects include a case analysis and a comprehensive exit exam.Ĭandidates are required to complete a minimum of eight hundred (800) clock hours in two of three school levels such as elementary, middle, high school with a minimum of two hundred (200) clock hours within each level. While it is possible to complete all the courses required for the credential in a two-year period, such a program requires careful planning. To earn the Pupil Personnel Services Credential Master's degree, students must complete the core requirements above and the School Counseling specialization courses below. The School Counseling / Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential option is a 60 unit program, comprised of 19 units of Major Core Requirements and 41 units of School Counseling coursework.
